Gavin Williams - we really signed some shite under Pardew didn't we?
Watching the end of Palace V Reading tonight when I got in from work and I heard the name Danny Williams; obviously having Pardew on the mind I wondered briefly whether he was the Williams we had briefly in the Championship the time before last. Of course he wasn't, because it turns out that was Gavin Williams.

Anyway, just looked him up to see what he's doing now and (albeit at 35) he's now player manager of Merthyr Town, in a league where I reckon most of us could get a game. It got me to thinking about some of the crap Pardew signed - Adam Nowland, Robbie Stockdale, Wayne Quinn...I'm sure there are more but you'd probably struggle to come up with anyone worse than that last one.

Seems a lifetime ago now. So what does that make Pardew - a clever manager who managed to get the job done with some very (below) average players? A scattergun merchant with no eye for a player who got lucky? An arch pragmatist in the Allardyce mould who is seen with relatively rose tinted glasses due to the cup final? Discuss.

Yes, I'm fucking bored.

I don't understand this thread at all. Some of the posts are from people who obviously are clueless about that part of the clubs history.

We were in a far worse state than when we went down under Grant. Pardew worked miracles with his transfer dealings. People who say Reo Coker was rubbish are talking nonsense and basing it on nothing other than his last season, he was a good player for us and good captain. Sold on for huge profit as well, McAnuff was sold in order for Pardew to bring in Sheringham such were to lack of funds he had to work with. Gavin Williams was fine at that level in the limited opportunities he had. Stockdale and Quinn were short term loans so does it matter if they did not perform as well as hoped?

It's the managers who spend big on shit that need puling up not the likes of Pardew

I bump into Gavin Williams quite regularly at Merthyr games. Nice guy.

People forget we had fuck all money, we went down and had to sell our best players.

Pardew spent less than £4m in the Championship over two seasons.

I think you'll find Pardew could be labelled a right wheeler dealer if you looked at his transfer record.

Another fan that really doesn't understand the general quality of player you can sign in the championship on a limited budget or a newly promoted side.

Pardew like every other manager signed good players and bad players.

I was at a game when Gavin Williams scored an excellent goal for us, at Leeds away (I think?). At championship level he didn't seem like a bad player at all actually. Not PL quality, but we payed very little for him. I'm not necessarily Pardews biggest fan but thought he generally did well in the transfer market.

It was doubted whether Luis FIGO had the necessary desire to make any sort of contribution away to Stoke on a Wet Wednesday evening, IIRC.

When we won promotion via the play off I remember I'd been out all night and walking home from a mates. Went to the off license for the papers and saw West Ham to sign FIGO on the back of the Star.
Went home smoked a massive joint in excitement reading about the possibility of signing him and being back in the premiership.

Logged on WHO and was surprised to see two posters who are on here now suggest that it would be unfair on Gavin WILLIAMS if we signed FIGO because he was half decent at Ipswich away.

I was cracking up.

Gay Swedish fella with the pants? Thomas Hitzlesperger? (quite possibly spelt wrong). Well, he was gay. And German rather than Swedish. Not sure about the connection to pants though.

He was here during the Grant season, although from memory did Gold/Sullivan sign him before the competed the appointment?

Williams & Nowland always did ok. Nowland barely played after us because of injury....think he went to America.

Re: Gavin Williams - we really signed some shite under Pardew didn't we?
A bit harsh. You have to consider we were in the Championship at the time and in a massive transitional period. IMO, we were in a worse state than when Allardyce took over following Grant taking us down.

As it happens, I thought Gavin Williams was alright and did quite well in the games he had but he didn't get too much playing time, which wasn't entirely his fault.

Was it this bloke?

Swedish midfielder Niclas Alexandersson has joined First Division side West Ham from Everton in a loan deal.
The 31-year-old completed the deal at Upton Park on Thursday night and will get straight down to training with his new team-mates.

"I know Niclas has played at the top level and is capable of doing it," said Hammers' caretaker boss Trevor Brooking.

Re: Gavin Williams - we really signed some shite under Pardew didn't we?
I seem to remember Reo Coker coming on as an ostensibly attacking sub when we were losing in the first play off final against Palace and doing exactly that. Frustrating.

Darby - that's kind of my point. You can't really say he got it wrong on any of them in terms of deciding they weren't good enough and then they turned out to be great. Far from it. But does that mean he shouldn't have signed them in the first place, or that he was a magician in achieving what he did with such mediocre tools at his disposal? I really don't know, to this day.
